Orcas Island Literary Festival with Bill Carty, Teresa K. Miller, & Michael Schmeltzer

Within families, communities, and ecosystems, what gets passed down can be gift or burden—or both. In their new poetry collections, these four poets examine crises and triumphs that echo across generations, considering the familial, cultural, scientific, and environmental impacts of inheritance. From genetic traits, heirlooms, and stories to trauma, natural consequences, and pain, this panel will feature readings and conversation exploring how these poets work with what has been left to them.

Relationships, Reckonings & Remembrances: A Reading by Three California Poets

How do we contemplate and document political and familial histories? How can we address struggle and grief, love and survival? Three California poets navigate relationships, reckonings, and memory with unerring eyes through their distinct poetic voices. Join Mai Der Vang (Yellow Rain), Amanda Moore (Requeening), and Christine No (Whatever Love Means) for readings from each of their masterful new poetry collections followed by a Q&A. Hosted by El Cerrito’s inaugural poet laureate, Maw Shein Win (Storage Unit for the Spirit House).
